At five months, Scarlett:
*weighs 14 pounds 6.5 ounces (40th %ile)
*is 26 inches long (80th %ile)
*is doing MUCH better sleeping at night. I posted about it here but she basically wakes 2-3 times a night and only nurses 2 of those times. She eats anywhere from 1-3 AM and again at 5 AM and takes a bottle of formula from Daddy at one feeding and nurses for the other
*sleeps in her crib for naps and at night. We are about to put the pack-n-play away. :o(
*no longer swaddled! One night Jason put her to bed without it when I was away and we haven't noticed any change so I think we will put the swaddle away, too!
*takes 3-4 naps a day. She goes down easily (no pacifier but I do turn on her sounds/lights soother) and always sleeps 40 minutes. Most of the time I can go back in and extend her naps by giving her the paci but sometimes she is up and ready to go
*isn't interested in rolling much and she can sit with help
*nurses every 3.5 hours
*had her first solids: rice in a bottle on Feb 20 and then in a bowl on Feb 25
She had sweet potatoes on March 3, pears on March 10, and carrots today. She has done great with all of them! She pushes it out a little bit but also opens her mouth to take big bites and seems to enjoy it. We wait a week for each food to check for reactions.
*only has about 1-2 dirty diapers a week and they seem a bit thick. I have experimented with some dairy and it always makes her go, even though last month I thought it was constipating her (must have been due to introducing formula). It looks fairly normal so I think I will keep having some about once a week.
*has eczema that seems to be a bit better, we are using lotion a couple times a day to help
*eyes are still light blue, hair is dark blonde
*wears size 2 diapers, 3-6 and 6-12 month clothes
*played in her jumparoo (ehh) but Lilli loved it!
*has figured out how to blow raspberries and sometimes mimics us when we do it
*is such a happy girl. She goes with the flow and is easy to take places. We really are blessed!

Scarlett SLEEPS!
Chances are, you have heard me complain about Scarlett's sleep. Or lack thereof. I apologize for being a broken record about it - but exhaustion was taking over my life!
I have always loved my sleep and needed more than just 8 hours at night. Naps make me happy. I worried before I had Lilli that I would never sleep again. But - surprise! She slept! All the time. Great napper, even slept through the night once we brought her home! That's not to say she didn't wake up in the night occasionally for various reasons, but I never had true sleep deprivation. I was pretty sure she was a great sleeper because I was a great parent. Ha... little did I know...
Enter sweet Scarlett Jean...
From birth she was a good sleeper. Just like big sis. THEN...something changed. I like to blame my pediatrician (whom I love) because he told me to wake her once at night to eat at her 2 month WBV. Big mistake. She woke once that night, twice the next, three the next, etc. At her worst she was waking 7-8 times! And each time she HAD to be nursed back to sleep, despite Jason rocking her or us trying to give her a pacifier.
I created this and I knew it. I loved breastfeeding her and she loved it, too. She wanted to nurse for food, comfort and as a pacifier to go to sleep. So I let her. But after 2.5 months of this I was barely functioning, crying alot, and feeling depressed. I knew I wasn't a good mommy to Lilli OR Scarlett and something had to change.
Thank goodness for The Baby Whisperer. I have actually read FIVE different sleep books and this was not one of them. But, I stumbled upon this forum and from that was able to figure out the secrets of the book. Basically, it has babies on a "schedule" (use that term loosely here) called "E.A.S.Y." Baby wakes in the morning and EATS, has ACTIVITY, then SLEEPS, while mom has some YOU time. But the point is that baby does not eat directly before sleeping. Whoops, that is what we did, all.day.long.
So starting 2 weeks ago, I tried to nurse Scarlett when she woke up from a "nap" (if you can call it that) and played with her. Then, I would put her to bed, wide awake. Eat, play, sleep. This was something I always did with Lilli but I had forgotten about it! Much to my surprise Scarlett didn't fuss much. And when she did, I would go in and pat her tummy and give her her giraffe lovey and pacifier. For some reason, she would be tired enough to take the pacifier for a second and she would fall asleep. She wouldn't sleep longer than 40 minutes, but it was a start!!
I started reading more and more of the forums and realized at Scarlett's age she could go longer between feedings. And if she did that, she wouldn't just snack or graze, instead she would actually take a FULL feeding. So, I put her on a 3.5 hour EASY schedule.
She wakes and eats soon after. I wait 2 hours and then put her down for a nap. 3.5 hours after her feeding she eats again. Rinse and repeat 4 times a day.
I couldn't believe it but she was actually taking to the schedule really well! Her naps were still short but her feedings were MUCH better, she was now taking both sides and seemed full. I knew that if she cried later it was because she was tired or overstimulated, but not hungry.
Once our days were better I started changing what happened at night. First big move - put Scarlett in her crib. I knew that each time she woke in the Pack N Play right next to my bed that it woke me and I immediately got her up. If she were in her crib, I would think more about her cries before getting out of bed. Thankfully, it was a smooth transition! She seems to like her bed. Jason and I enjoy being able to watch TV in our room again!
The first night in her crib she woke 8 times. EIGHT. But each night after that she woke less and less. Finally when she was waking about 4 times I decided that if she could go 3.5 hours between feedings during the day she could do it at night, too. Sometimes she wakes earlier and we just go in and give her the paci to buy some more time. But she doesn't eat before that time (obviously if she were screaming I would think she was hungry, but that is not what she does).
Now she is only waking 2-3 times a night. Jason gives her a bottle of milk or formula and I sleep through the first one. Then I wake around 2 to nurse her. She usually wakes around 5 and I nurse her then, too. Eventually we will drop the first feeding but I plan to wait a few more weeks before I try that, as she might do it on her own.
So nights were better in her room with less nursing, but naps were still bad. She would wake at 40 minutes on.the.dot. each time. Turns out this is completely biological - her brain is switching to a new, deeper sleep cycle and it wakes her every time. She would wake up happy so I thought she was ready to get out of the crib. WRONG. She might be happy for the moment (to see my face, hehe) but she would start fussing about an hour later. So I would think that meant she was hungry and nurse her and she would fall asleep at the breast and we would start the vicious cycle again!
Now I let her "talk" in her bed for about 10 minutes. She will eventually start to fuss, I go in and give her the lovey and paci and she falls asleep for about 40 more minutes. We might even do this a third time. Amazingly, she doesn't cry much and I know she needs more than 40 minutes now so I make sure to not get her up.
So, in just a short week of doing the Baby Whisperer's plan we are going to bed easily, only waking for feedings and taking naps that last over 1.5 hours (even though they might be in pieces.) Quite the improvement!!
But the best part - I am back to the land of the living! I feel much better. Although I would LOVE to get a stretch of sleep that was 8 hours or so, but I know that will come soon enough. For now it is nice to get 5-6. We didn't have to "cry it out" to get to this point but I feel like I know her needs more. She is on a routine and seems to be doing well with the consistency. I like knowing that she won't need to eat until "x" time and she will be sleeping at "y" time so I can plan my day accordingly.
Now, if only we could get sister to stay in her bed all night, but that is a different problem for a different day!

Scarlett is FOUR months old!
At four months, Scarlett:
*weighs 13 pounds 4 ounces (40th %ile)
*is 26 inches long (97th %ile)
*still only sleeps a few hours at a time at night. She might give me a 3-4 hour stretch, starting around 8 or so. Then she will wake every 1-2 hours after that the rest of the night. We are exhausted! I am trying to get her to bed earlier and now she is only swaddled from the waist down, but nothing seems to really change. She just loves to nurse and cuddle in the middle of the night!
*naps about 4 times a day, usually around 45-60 minutes. She is only awake about 2 hours if I can help it
*Sleeps in her crib and in her Pack N Play. She did sleep in her crib overnight (well, for 3 hours!) a couple times this month but we ended up moving her back to our room
*Incredibly happy and good. She is such a joy.
*She rolled tummy to back on February 3 - Lilli LOVED cheering her on
*She rolled back to tummy on February 12 - Mommy and Daddy both got to see this one!
*Had her first bottle of Alimentum formula on February 16. I mixed it with breastmilk and she took it ok. I wanted to give her some because we are going to Nashville for the day without her and she might have to supplement.
*Still nurses every 2-3 hours during the day
*Stools vary, mostly yellow but changes from runny/mucusy/seedy. Haven't seen blood in a while. I did add some hidden dairy back into my diet but she hasn't had a stool in a few days for me to see what it does. Maybe it makes her constipated!?
*Has some eczema/dry skin on the outsides of her legs and torso and arms
*Eyes are still very blue, hair is blonde and sometimes sticks up in the middle like a mohawk
*Wears size 3-6 month clothes and either size 1 or 2 diapers, depending on what we have
*She has really started interacting with Lilli and it warms my heart. She LOVES watching Lilli play around her
*Had her first Valentine's Day. Daddy got her a pink hippo that Lilli loves and named "Promise"
*weighs 13 pounds 4 ounces (40th %ile)
*is 26 inches long (97th %ile)

Overall this has been a long month, due to her not sleeping and big sis having a bad cough. But we are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel - it can't be like this forever! Plus, seeing the personality come out of this little baby makes it all worth it! I remember things getting so much fun around 4-6 months with Lilli so I know we have lots of things to look forward to!

Pictures...
I absolutely love taking pictures of the girls. I think that is obvious. I am not very good at it, but I try not to let that stop me. I especially enjoy dressing them alike and sitting them in the chair just to snap the photo. I wish I were better at taking my camera out and about and getting pictures of them actually doing things, but my camera is big and I have enough to lug around, not to mention I hate being that mom. This year, though, I hope to get more pictures outside our house!
Here are some recent ones I took that I thought turned out cute. I have these collages hanging on our wall now...
Today I went upstairs to get out some old pictures of Jason and I. My mom was asking me who I think the girls each look like - so what better way to find out? Most people agree that Lillian looks like Jason and Scarlett is starting to favor me. But after looking at these, I'm not so sure!
Are you ready for some cuteness!?
I don't have years/ages on these because our mothers were apparently too busy raising us to write down the info on the back of the photo. If only we had blogs back then!
Well kids, that was fun. Now I am more confused than ever as to who Lilli and Scarlett look like. I do know one thing, though. I will NEVER give my girls permed, teased bangs. I can't say the same for "foo-foo" outfits, though. Some things never change!

Forgive the crappy quality, old pics + scanner = hard to see.
Mommy-
Scarlett DEFINITELY has my chin. I can claim that.
I'm pretty sure I almost squeezed whatever young animal I was holding to death. But thankfully my mom was more concerned with getting a picture. Good job, mom!
Proof that dressing your girls in silly outfits just to take their picture is NOT something I came up with on my own...
Cheer up, Ash...then again, my outfit is clearly cuter than yours.
When I was looking through old pictures I found this one of me and my old dog, Cricket. She loved me and I loved her! Here I am with the chicken pox, and she wouldn't leave my side. I see Lilli in me here...
I've always loved playing sports AND having my picture taken.
(I won't scan the group shot but I was full on bawling in that one.)
And my grand finale. I want to question my mother's intentions on this hair style.
Really, mom? Really?
Now for some pictures of Jason!
I don't have many pictures of him as an infant, but how about this one -
hubba hubba, look at those thighs!!
I see ALOT of Scarlett in these next two!
How cute is this face!?
I see Lilli in him as he got older -
And, because it wouldn't be fair to put an embarrassing photo of ME without doing the same for Jason, doesn't this picture scream, "I'm pooping right now!" Hehehe...

Scarlett is THREE months old!
Just look at that sweet face! Scarlett is THREE months old!
At 3 months, Scarlett:
*weighs 12 pounds and 1/2 ounce (40%ile)
*is 25 inches long (90%ile)
*sleeps only 2-3 hours at a time at night. Major regression this month! She started the month sleeping 6+ hour stretches but something has changed and Momma is not a fan!
*naps are not consistent but when she does sleep she can give me a good hour or two. Seems like every other day is a good nap day. The off days she likes to catnap for about half an hour
*She takes most naps in her crib now that Daddy installed a nice warm heater in her room
*Sleeps in her Pack N Play bassinet (we took the "newborn napper" out, tear!)
*Laughs, smiles, coos at me all the time - she is always happy
*Loves to be on a blanket or her rainforest play mat. She can now hit the toys, which excites her!
*She found her hand/fingers this month, which means a drooly but happy baby!
*She sat in the bumbo seat for the first time this month, which you can see she enjoyed.
Sister enjoyed it, too! |
* Can hold her head up well on her own
*Is exclusively breastfed and only takes bottles when I can't nurse. She takes about 4 ounces at at time
*Her stool has improved, but it still not what it should be. I have not had dairy in almost 6 weeks. Her weight gain has been above average, though, so we are still not thinking about formula
*Skin is clear but seems to be sensitive
*Hair is getting lighter, eyes are lighter blue but I don't expect them to stay blue
*Wears some 0-3 month clothes, some 3-6
*Wears size 1 diaper
*Doesn't like her carseat or the swing, she would rather be held or flat on the floor
*Had her first cold this month - had watery eyes and a small cough, some congestion
*We all had the stomach virus but she didn't get it (thanks to nursing!)
*Experienced Christmas for the first time
*Went to her first MCHS basketball game on January 13 - she did great, even sleeping through most of it
Scarlett Jean,
You have brought so much joy to this family! Your sister, Daddy and I love you more than you can ever know. I cannot wait to see what next month holds, I love seeing you grow and explore the world!
We love you!
